City of Port Phillip Social Justice Charter Launch

On 11th December, 2011, International Human Rights Day, the City of Port Phillip launched its Social Justice Charter at a Community Fair in O’Donnell Gardens.

The Social Justice Charter will help guide Council decision making and provide a framework for working in partnership with the local community to achieve social justice.

The Charter is based on six principles:

  • Participation in decision making and Council processes
  • Partnership with our Indigenous community
  • Access – equality of access to information, facilities and services,
  • Respect – valuing diversity
  • Addressing the rising cost of living: reducing disadvantage
  • Enjoying the City: being connected.

Carolyn Briggs, National Elder of the Year 2011, gave the Welcome to Country speech. Hosted by MC Rod Quantock, the Community Fair showcased singers and performers and throughout the day there were activities for all ages, plus free food.

Various community groups set up stalls to show the community what they do and how their work contributes to making the community socially just.  Fel Bisiani, ESNLC Manager, and Philippa Armstrong, Roomers Magazine Project Leader, distributed copies of Roomers Magazine and information about ESNLC.  Philippa and contibuters to Roomers Magazine gave impressive readings of contributors’ work at soapbox corner.
